We have planned a range of great events for you to take part in throughout the weekend and beyond. Explore Edinburgh and surrounding areas with our tours, and delve into Scotland’s culture at Saturday’s Ceilidh.
Friday 29 August – Evening Reception
To welcome you to Edinburgh and to the 18th International Fair Trade Towns Conference, we will have an evening reception to be hosted at Edinburgh City Chambers on Friday 29 August from 7:00 – 8:30pm.
We will formally open the conference, with drinks and light snacks provided. Don’t worry – the dress code is casual.
Saturday 30 August – Ceilidh
On Saturday evening, 30 August we hope to arrange a ceilidh, (pronounced “kay-lee”), which is a fun evening of traditional Scottish dancing and entertainment. Dances will be explained by the “caller”, and are often performed in groups.
A free buffet will be provided, but drinks are not included. They can be purchased at your own expense.
Sunday 31 August – ARthur’s Seat & Evening Cruise on the Forth
A guided Sunday morning walk has been arranged to the top of Arthur’s Seat. The views from Arthur’s Seat are phenomenal. You will have 360° views of the city from the top of this extinct volcano.
The walk plus time at the summit should take around 1 hour 30 minutes. The walk is fairly accessible, but can be steep and rocky in some areas. Remember to bring walking shoes or trainers.
On Sunday evening we are planning an evening cruise on the Firth of Forth. The cruise will be free but you will have to make your own way to and from the quay (Bus route 43 from Princes Street). Food and drinks are at your cost.
The above two events are being generously sponsored and organised by Hand Up Events, a social action business focusing on events that promote cultural exchange, community engagement, and Fair Trade.
Monday 1 September – True Origin Visit & Scenic Tour of central Scotland
On Monday 1 September, although the main conference will be finished, there is an opportunity to join a day trip to visit True Origin – a WFTO Guaranteed Organization in Paisley, in the west of Scotland.
Following a tour of the warehouse and the opportunity to sample a number of True Origin’s products, a sandwich lunch and hot drinks will be provided.
The tour will then continue to explore the beautiful scenery of central Scotland and up to the southern highlands, returning to Edinburgh around 5:00 – 6:00pm. The cost for the bus tour for the day will be approximately £20 – 25 per person. Additional refreshments during the tour are not included in this cost.
